Three places files can live

• Against a customer, for trade agreements, credit applications, resale certificates or artwork approvals
• Against an order, for proofs, drawings, test certificates, export paperwork or a signed delivery note
• Against a manufacturer, for datasheets, safety data, warranty terms and brand assets

Delivered with the order status

Attachments can be tied to order status, so a document is released to the customer when an order reaches Processing or Complete, and withheld on Declined or Cancelled. That turns it into a practical way of issuing certificates or licence documents alongside a physical despatch.

It checks the server for you

The admin screen reports whether PHP file uploads are enabled, the effective post_max_size and upload_max_filesize, the largest file you can therefore upload, and whether both the temporary and permanent storage directories are writable, telling you exactly which directory to change if not. Most support tickets about upload plugins are really PHP configuration questions, and this answers them before you have to ask.
